According to Monroe Town Historian James Nelson, the Firemen’s Opera House was purchased by Mombasha Fire Co. in 1900 to house its firefighting equipment. Upstairs was the meeting rooms, which would be used for dances, lectures and later movies. The basement held a jail cell and was a village lockup. It did not get good marks from the state jail inspector. They would later build a separate building in the rear of the fire house for just a jail. The building dates back the mid 1800’s and served as Tin Shop and hardware store previously. The fire company moved to Route 17M in 1969 and the building would eventually become the Flynn Funeral Home.
