How can you make luminaries?

Here’s directions for making luminaries, provided by the members of Warwick-In-Bloom, the award-winning, volunteer, community beautification group: Materials Needed: Three votive candles, three bags of sand and three paper sacks. Directions: Open each paper sack. Fold the top edge down approximately one inch all around the top of the bag. Flatten the folded edge and fold the top over again. The bag is now stronger and will stand up straight when fully opened. Empty the sand from the plastic baggies into each paper sack. Be sure your sand is dry. Wet sand will dampen the bags and the bags will tear. The sand will keep the bag from blowing over and it will hold the candle in place. Position your bags outdoors on a flat surface and away from any flammable materials, like dry grasses or trash. The group suggests creating a row along your front property line or driveway. Make a hole in the middle of the sand and push the candle in about halfway. Again, this anchors the candle and the sand will not extinguish the flame. When to light the candles: At 6 p.m., use a long grill lighter or long fireplace match to light the candles.
