Shame on you

“Ray Rivera attends Monroe-Woodbury School Board Meeting,” reads the headline. How sad is it that a board member’s attendance warrants so much attention? In case you have forgotten, Mr. Rivera, attending board meetings is what you were elected to do. Not only were you elected to attend meetings, but also you were elected to provide your opinions on whatever issues are current with the board. You have sold your home and moved out of state, yet can’t decide whether to resign or to serve the remainder of your term. Mr. Rivera, I have news for you. By your absence, you have not served for the past few months. Was moving out-of-state your “good and valid excuse” for missing all but one meeting this year? The board has missed your presence, your input and your vote. Do the right thing, and resign. And, Dr. DiGeronimo, if selling one’s home and moving out-of-state does not constitute abandoning residency, I don’t know what does. He may not have legally abandoned residency, but Mr. Rivera has abandoned Monroe-Woodbury. My feeling is that the Board is waiting until after the elections to announce the departure of Mr. Rivera so that it can appoint, rather than allow the taxpayers to elect a replacement for the upcoming year. This is politics at its worst. Karen D. Ungerer Highland Mills
