‘Give us a Hollywood ending’

I join with other residents who are upset about the Monroe Theater’s purchase at auction by the Town Board.

The original theater has been closed for over ten years. During that time, we have endured years staring at a closed theater, unfinished construction and a giant erector set of a frame along the Millpond, fond memories of the original theater fading as the years went by.

The three-year respite when the new Monroe Theater finally opened brought a much needed burst of vitality to downtown. What a pleasure not to have to travel to Chester, Middletown or Newburgh for a night out.

How nice to see cars lining the streets, people waiting in line for a show, teenagers with someplace to go. In my opinion, the theater was also the cleanest in Orange County.

All too soon the theater closed.

Folks, we have been “waiting in line” long enough. Give us a Hollywood ending, not a palatial Town Hall.
