Central Valley - The Monroe-Woodbury School District Art Show and Art Scholarship Auction will be held the weekend of April 29. The show includes artwork from students throughout the district, ranging from kindergarten to twelfth grade. A highlight of the show is the portfolio presentations of the High School Senior Art Majors. A great range of work will be displayed including paintings, prints, computer animation, photography, ceramics, sculpture, video productions, drawings, graphics and many more creative works showcasing the artistic talents of the students. The opening reception and the chance to meet the artists will be Friday, April 29, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. in the High School lobby gallery. The artwork will be available for viewing on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and then again on Sunday, May 1, from noon to 5 p.m. The annual Art Scholarship furniture Auction will take place Friday, April 29, beginning at 6:30 pm. All chairs and tables are hand-painted by Senior Art Majors and Drawing and Painting students. Each piece focuses on historic artistic styles or masterpieces of various artists. All proceeds will benefit the scholarship program for graduating seniors. The third element of the program is the “Empty Bowls” project, which also takes place on Friday, April 29, beginning at 5:30 p.m. during the Art Show. Participants create ceramic bowls and then serve a simple meal. Guests choose a bowl to use that day and to keep as a reminder that there are always empty bowls in the world. In exchange for a meal (ice cream) and the bowl, the guests give a suggested minimum donation of $10. The meal sponsors will choose a hunger-fighting organization to receive the money collected. We have chosen to donate to the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley. This project is a joint effort involving the Art Department and the Art Guild.
