Monroe K of C crowns youth free throw champions

MONROE — Several children from the Monroe area were named local champions of the 2018 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship and have earned the right to compete at the district level.
Monroe Council 2079 sponsored the local competition at the Sacred Heart School gymnasium. All youngsters ages 9 to 14 were eligible to participate.
The champions• Ashton Capen captured the title as the 9-year-old champion.
• Troy Capen was crowned the champion of the 10-year-old division.
• Lily Mahoney battled it out with Audrey Hala to win the 11-year-old girl’s division.
• Benjamin Grippo took first in the 11-year-old boy’s division.
• Arianna and Alex Exarchakis were the winners of the girl’s and boy’s 12-year-old divisions.
• Thomas Forsyth came out victorious in the boy’s 14-year-old division.
• Natalie Harwood also made a good effort in the 11 year-old division.
There were no participants for the other divisions.
Each contestant was allowed 15 free-throw attempts in the contests. Ties were settled by successive rounds of five free throws per contestant until a winner emerged.
Each of these winners will compete in the district competition to be held in February with an eye toward moving on to the conference, regional and state levels. Monroe Council 2079 sponsors this event every January.
