On Friday, March 27, the Monroe-Woodbury High School girls flag football team traveled to Goshen High school to take on the Gladiators in a non league match up. The Crusaders entered their fourth season with head coach Elaine Schellberg and assistant coach Kate Santoianni at the controls. The team enters their season with a 34-13 record with one Section 9 championship to their credit.

The Crusaders came into the game with a 1-0 record on the season after beating Minisink Valley 6-0 in their first game. The Gladiators were also undefeated after beating Valley Central 6-0 in their opening game.

In the first quarter, the two teams exchanged possessions and field position as they probed each other for a weakness. In the second quarter, Ariana Torrellas stopped a Gladiator scoring threat when she made a beautiful one handed interception at the Crusaders one-yard line. The Crusaders took possession dangerously backed up against their own end zone. That’s when QB Natalie Beers took the snap and darted between two Gladiator defenders broke to the outside and raced 34 yards before being stopped giving the team a big first down. A few plays later Beers rolled out a found Kaylen Baricevic who made a diving catch in the end zone to put the Crusaders up 6-0. The Crusaders added an extra point when Beers hit Isla Vilsaint over the middle to make the score 7-0 as the teams went into the half.

In the second half the Crusaders defense set the tone for the rest of the game on the Gladiators first possession. Crusader defensive line of Elina Wood and Liz Taber each came up with sacks to keep the Gladiators backed up in their end of the field. The Crusaders got the ball back and quickly drove deep into Goshen territory but the Gladiator defense came up big when they stopped them on a fourth and goal from the four-yard line. In the fourth quarter, a Gladiator interception gave them the ball in Crusader territory. But again the Crusader defense rose to the occasion and broke up a pass into the end zone on fourth down. Late in the game the Gladiators drove down to the Crusader two-yard line but the Crusader defense kept them off the board again to preserve the victory.

The Crusaders 7-0 victory brings their record to 2-0 on the season their next game will be on Wednesday when they travel to Middletown.
