WALLKILL — On Saturday, Oct. 28, the Monroe-Woodbury Girls Varsity Soccer Team met the Wildcats of Warwick for the Section 9 AA title at Wallkill High School.
The Crusaders entered the game having won the last four consecutive sectional titles.
The two teams met in last year's title game with the Crusaders winning 3-1.
The two teams had also met earlier this season and played to a 0-0 tie.
The Wildcats got off to a great start Saturday when five minutes into the game they were awarded a penalty kick and Gabi Rusek put her shot into the Crusaders net for a 1-0 lead.
But the Crusaders never lost their focus and began to take control of the game by keeping the ball in the Wildcat end of the field and creating scoring opportunities.
Finally with 10 seconds left in the first half ,Crusader Colleen Kinsella drilled a 45-foot shot just under the crossbar off a corner kick and the score was tied at 1-1.
In the second half the Crusaders scored quickly when Liz Myers broke past two Wildcat defenders and beat the goalie to the ball and giving it just enough touch to find the corner of the net and put the Crusaders up 2-1.
Then with 23:47 left in the game Angelica Sanchez used her speed to bring the ball down the right side line and, with a brilliant move spun past the Wildcat defender, put her shot past the Wildcat goalie for the score.
The Crusaders' 3-1 victory gives them their unprecedented fifth consecutive Section 9 AA Tittle in a row and put them into the state playoffs.
The Crusaders will face the Section 4 Champion Elmira Express on Thursday night in Middletown in the opening round off the NYSPHSAA playoffs.
