BEAR MOUNTAIN — On Friday afternoon, Dec. 8, the Monroe-Woodbury Crusaders and the North Rockland Red Raiders met in the third annual Winter Classic at the ice rink at Bear Mountain State Park.
The Winter Classic asks fans to bring unwrapped toys to be given to the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital for distribution.
The Winter Classic is a unique high school sports experience the two teams get together once a year for a charitable cause, they change together in a common locker room and the game is played on the old outdoor rink at the state park where probably more than a few of them learned to skate.
Many of the families, friends and fans from both teams seem to know each other which adds to friendly charitable atmosphere of the event.
The Red Raiders rolled to a 9-4 victory in the game with Luke Morris and Eric Dunn each scoring two goals apiece to lead the Red Raiders attack.
The Crusaders goals were scored by Chris Cromwell (two), Richard Monda and Paul McKeon.
Crusader Goalie Sam Steuber was under constant pressure. He made 34 saves to try and keep the Crusaders in the game.
The Crusaders will next take the ice at the YMCA in Albany on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 12:30 p.m. when they take on Bethlehem Eagles.
