Highland Mills - Woodbury Cub Scout Pack 148 held their annual Pinewood Derby on Jan. 19 at St. Patrick’s Gymnasium in Highland Mills. The Cub Scouts who participated are in the first through fifth grade. There were 62 hand-crafted cars made by the scouts. Each entry had to meet the size and weight requirements to compete on the “state of the art” race track. Multiple heats determined the winners. here were racing stripe cars, patriotic cars, scary cars, superhero cars, tiger cars and much more - even a turtle car and a fireball! The Pinewood Derby is a long-standing tradition in Cub Scouts and a highlight of the year for scouts and their families. Boys and an adult are given a kit including pine wood, wheels and directions to make a small race car that is carved and painted to move fast. Youngsters develop craftsmanship, work with tools and bond with an adults while learning the importance of sportsmanship. Scout leaders and parents plan the event every year. Beginning at about 8 am, volunteers were setting up the track, tables, chairs, computers, decorations and awards. Woodbury Supervisor John Burke, congratulated all the scouts on their efforts and started the first race. Special thanks go to all the volunteers helped make this event the success it was.
