NEW HAMPTON-Residents of Orange County may dispose of their household hazardous waste on Saturday, Oct. 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Orange County Fire Training Center, 19 Training Center Lane in New Hampton. There will be no charge to county residents. Residents can get rid of cans of pesticides, oil-based paints, varnishes and other household hazardous wastes in a safe and environmentally friendly way. The collection also has been expanded to include the disposal of fluorescent light bulbs. Computer Monitors and TV sets contain lead within the CRTs (Cathode Ray Tubes). The lead strengthens the glass tube while protecting the user from radioactive rays, cadmium, phosphorous, and mercury. Because CRT's are no longer accepted as regular trash for disposal, Orange County has included this material in its' Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event. Additional materials being accepted at the event include CPU's, keyboards, printers, scanners, laptops, and the mouse. You may obtain additional information and registration form by calling the office of the Orange County DPW, Division of Environmental Facilities and Services at 1-800-328-4808, (845) 291-2643 or email: efs@co.orange.ny.us. The form can also be obtained on the County Web page atwww.orangecountygov.com (choose County Dept., then Environmental Services, look for Household Hazardous Waste information). The form must be printed and completed. Registrations cannot be accepted over the phone or via email. Completed forms can be faxed to (845) 291-2665.
