NY warming to first indoor tanning ban for youths
ALBANY New York is looking to ban the tan. Lawmakers are pushing to make New York the first state in the nation to bar indoor tanning for all children. The effort was named last week among the top priorities this legislative session by the American Cancer Society. The industry says the idea is just the “nanny state’s” latest assault on their business. And it comes at the height of the indoor tanning season for teens: Prom time. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently called a ban for tanners under 18. More than two dozen states regulate indoor tanning of minors. New York is among at least a half-dozen that bars it for children under 14, and it currently requires parental permission for tanners 14 to 17 years old. The proposal would ban it for anyone under 18.
