Monroe Police issue 82 summons during commerical vehicle safety detail
Monroe On Monday, Sept. 26, Monroe Police conducted a commercial vehicle enforcement detail along with the New York State Department of Transportation Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Unit. For eight hours, approximately 60 commercial vehicles ranging from dump trucks, garbage trucks, tractor trailers and box trucks were inspected. These inspections include the brakes and mechanical aspects of the truck, the contents of the vehicle and the drivers licensing and qualifications to drive the truck. According to a press release from the department, nine vehicles were taken out of service for violations which were considered so dangerous they were not allowed to continue on the roadway. These included bad brakes, no brakes, driving on flat tires, having loose or unsecured loads or steering problems. In total 82 summonses were issued to drivers; two drivers also were arrested and charged with for driving with suspended drivers licenses. “The Monroe Police Department conducts approximately eight of these details a year,” Det. James Frankild said in the press release. “In addition, we have patrol officers specifically trained in commercial vehicle enforcement and the transportation laws governing commercial vehicles, which allows officers to thoroughly inspect commercial vehicles they may come across on a daily basis. “The purpose of these commercial vehicle inspections is to remove unsafe commercial vehicles from the roadway,” he added, “which results in fewer motor vehicle crashes, and fewer injuries to people as a result of crashes.”
