MONROE — Supporters opposed to the Village of Kiryas Joel's 507 acre annexation request rallied this past Sunday on Route 17M near McDonald's to spread the word about their perspective on the proposal, and were greeted by hundreds of car horns honking their support.
In addition to their opposition of the annexation request, they are also demanding the Town of Monroe assert itself and assume lead agency status in the required State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) review.
The village submitted its request to the town on Dec. 27; a Jan. 27 deadline looms for the determination of that lead agency status.
Those who oppose the annexation say it has dire ramifications for the Town of Monroe, Village of Monroe and Village of Harriman and equally demand a thorough investigation of the request.
The Monroe-Woodbury School District also says there are has grave consequences for the district and potentially for district taxpayers in the towns of Chester, Blooming Grove, Monroe, Tuxedo and Woodbury.
