MIDDLETOWN — SUNY Orange has been ranked among the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and technical schools for its commitment to active and retired military personnel, earning the College a “Military Friendly Schools” certification from Victory Media Inc.
The list honors those post-secondary academic institutions that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans and spouses as students and to ensure their success on campus. The schools on the list also exhibit leading practices in the recruitment and retention of students with military experience.
As publisher of the “G.I. Jobs” magazine that is the premier publication for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, Victory Media has compiled its list of 1,739 Military Friendly Schools through research and a survey of more than 12,000 Veterans affairs-approved schools nationwide. The analysis of the survey criteria was developed with the assistance of an academic advisory board comprised of educators from across the country.
SUNY Orange offers services to assist veterans, including specialized academic advising, study skills workshops and transfer counseling. A designated academic advisor trained at the Center for Deployment Psychology assists student veterans with their return and adjustment to civilian life. The advisor helps students develop and implement their academic plans as well as support their transition to college by conducting workshops designed specifically for student veterans. Collaborations with veterans services agencies and organizations within the county bring an added array of resources to the campus. An active Veteran’s Club plays an important role in welcoming new veterans to the college and supporting them in their transition to student life.
“Veterans bring a unique perspective to our student body and are tremendous contributors to our entire college community,” SUNY Orange president Dr. William Richards said in the college’s press release announcing the recognition.
