Sojourner Truth Awards are a call to excellence

| 24 Mar 2016 | 02:41

— For the past twenty-six years, Orange County Community College has honored Sojourner Truth by holding an awards ceremony in her name.

The Sojourner Truth Awards Program hails students from grades 6 through 12 who have excelled in areas such as athletics, citizenship, creative arts, diversity, English language arts, foreign languages, perseverance/effort and sciences and technology. The program aims to promote education in a positive manner and motivate students who are from groups that are traditionally under-represented in the college population to consider college as a viable and attainable goal.

Sojourner Truth (1797-1883) was an African-American abolitionist and women's rights activist born into slavery in Swartekill, Ulster County, N.Y., but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. After going to court to recover her son, she became the first black woman to win such a case against a white man. In 2014, Truth was included in Smithsonian magazine's list of the "100 Most Significant Americans of All Time."
