Give a smile to a soldier

MONROE — Plenty of people want to show support for American troops stationed overseas, but it’s often hard to know exactly what to do. Monroe teen Alanah Abrahams has a plan.
She hopes Monroe residents will stop by the Monroe Free Library during the next two weeks to contribute to the care package that she’s coordinating. This is a package that contains useful stuff and also good wishes. She calls it “Miles of Smiles for Soldiers.”
Alanah’s uncle, Louis Rettenberg, is an Army captain who has finished a tour in Iraq and is currently serving in Afghanistan.
Alanah has made a poster at the library where residents are invited to write whatever they want to say to soldiers in the field - pictures and messages of thanks, but also jokes and riddles that might brighten a soldier’s day.
The library will also be collecting practical stuff that might go in a care package - deodorant, toothpaste, whatever else a Monroe family thinks a soldier might appreciate.
Teens are invited to come to the library on Saturday, Sept. 15, to box all the items and ship them to a U. S. base in Afghanistan.
