Do a good deed and donate a turkey or ham to a vet

American Legion Post 488’s annual Thanksgiving turkey-ham collection drive for needy vets is underway, and the Monroe organization is seeking turkey and ham donations from the community.

“We’re looking for the community's involvement to help needy vets to make their own Thanksgiving dinners,” said Post 488 member Marty Currid, who oversees the annual effort.

Currid said many people donate the free turkeys, and most never "miss" those turkeys because they're usually extra ones earned through shopping points at ShopRite.

“While we realize every opportunity to gain an extra food item at no cost is a great thing, we hope people will feel helping those in need is an even greater thing,” said Currid. “If you can help these special men and women -- who have given so much of themselves to help this nation stay safe -- to have a traditional Thanksgiving meal, you'd be doing a wonderful act of true kindness.”

Donors may stop by the Legion Hall on Lakes Road after 2 p.m. any day with their donations. The turkeys will be kept in the Legion's freezers and passed to veterans in time for Thanksgiving.

Legion officials will deliver the turkeys and hams the week of Nov. 18.
