Overdue library fines to 9/11 scholarship fund Monroe — The Monroe Free Library will donate 100 percent of the money it collects in overdue fees and fines, during the week of the Sept. 11 anniversary, to a scholarship fund helping the children of firefighters who died in the attack on the World Trade Center. From Monday, Sept. 5, until the close of business on Sunday, Sept. 11, every penny that the library takes in at its circulation desk will go to defray the cost of the kids’ education. “For the last eight years, we’ve given all of the income that we earned on September 11,” said the library’s Carol Bezkorowajny. “This year, for the tenth anniversary, we’re donating all of the money we make in a week. I’m hoping that users from other area libraries will make the trip to pay their fines here.” Bezkorowajny, the library’s Head Of Circulation, Automation and Technical Services, has spearheaded the charitable effort for the library. “September 11, 2001, was a day that affected us all profoundly,” Bezkorowajny said. “This is a fine way to make a real difference in the life of a child who lives every day with that loss.” In past years, some Monroe patrons have waited to pay their fines until the 11th, knowing that the money would go to the children of the fallen heroes. Patrons of other RCLS member libraries also have traveled to Monroe from as far away as Port Jervis.
