MONROE-The Monroe Police Department in conjunction with Project ChildSafe is offering Village of Monroe residents free firearm safety kits and free gun locking devices. Project ChildSafe is a nationwide program whose purpose is to promote safe firearms handling and storage practices among all firearms owners through the distribution of free firearm safety kits. The goal of this program is to prevent an unauthorized individual, often a child, from finding a loaded and unsecure firearm in the home. The risk of unintentional firearms-related injuries or deaths can be reduced when firearms owners are aware of and fully understand their responsibilities in storing firearms in a secure manner. "We have been involved with Project ChildSafe since it's inception and have already handed out a number of firearm safety kits to our residents" said Monroe Police Chief Dominic Giudice. "We have just recieved another shipment and are anxious to get them out to any family that needs them. We've seen or read too many heartbreaking stories about children finding unlocked guns in their homes and using them as toys - with tragic consequences. An unlocked gun is an invitation to tragedy," the police chief added. Firearm safety kits are available to any resident of the Village of Monroe and can be obtained by stopping in at Monroe Police Headquarters anytime.
