Monroe — To recognize the importance of fire safety, firefighters from the Monroe and Woodbury fire departments visited students at area schools during the national Fire Prevention Week earlier this week. At different preschool and elementary schools, students learned about the importance of having a fire plan in their homes and how to contact the fire department through the 911 system. Firefighters showed students their gear and the students were treated to a tour of the fire trucks. Firefighters also judged the poster entries of students who entered the annual Fire Safety Poster Contest at Sapphire, Smith Clove, Central Valley, North Main and Pine Tree elementary schools. Winners are expected to be announced shortly. The first place winners and their winning entries will be published in a future edition of The Photo News. Visits continue at area schools this month. - Nancy Kriz
