Robert O. Schade Sr., affectionately known as “Bob,” passed away peacefully at home in Middletown on Aug. 21, 2026, surrounded by the family he loved so dearly.
A lifelong resident of the area, Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, veteran and friend whose gentle soul and kind heart will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Bob was born Nov. 15, 1947, in Brooklyn to Otto and Martha Schade, who owned and operated Schade’s Restaurant in Highland Falls. As a young man, Bob worked alongside his parents at the family restaurant before beginning a long and dedicated career as a member of the Teamsters Union, where he drove long-haul trucks until his retirement.
A proud veteran, Bob honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His service was a source of great pride throughout his life.
Bob was a man who found happiness in the simple things. He loved working around his yard and took tremendous pride in keeping everything just right. His John Deere tractors were especially important to him, and he was meticulous about caring for them.
He also had a lifelong love of Harley-Davidson motorcycles and enjoyed the freedom and camaraderie that came with riding.
Above all else, Bob cherished his family. His grandchildren were truly the light of his life and he treasured every moment spent with them. His family will forever remember his quiet strength, gentle spirit, humor, hard work and the love he showed in his own special way.
Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife of 58 years, Barbara L. Schade, who passed away just one month ago. Their love and devotion to one another remained a beautiful part of their lives until the very end.
In a fitting testament to that enduring love, Bob and Barbara will be laid to rest together on what would have been their 59th wedding anniversary.
Bob leaves behind his daughter Sandi Schade and her partner, Terri Scribner; his son Bobby Schade and his partner, Jessica Novins; and his cherished grandchildren: Hope, Rob, Nicholas and Matthew, who brought him immeasurable joy.
He is also survived by his brother Rudy Schade and his wife, Sadie; his sister Barbara; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will carry his memory in their hearts.
In addition to his wife, Barbara, Bob was predeceased by his sister Carol Orsino and her husband, Pete Orsino; his daughter-in-law Jeannine Schade; his parents Otto and Martha Schade; and his parents-in-law Mary and Robert Conklin.
Bob lived a life rooted in family, hard work, service and love. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories that will be treasured by those fortunate enough to have known him. His gentle soul will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on through his children, grandchildren, family, and all those whose lives he touched.
Rest peacefully, Bob. Your work here is done. You and Barbara are together again, just as you always should be.
Graveside service will be held at Cemetery of the Highlands, in Highland Mills on Monday, Aug. 31, at 11 a.m.
Memorial contributions can be made to the charity of one’s choice in Robert’s name.
