Brian Slattery will be named Florida's Citizen of the Year - Seward Girls Varsity Soccer team, James and Lillian Sturr will also be recognized at Family Fun Fest this Sunday

Florida - Brian Slattery, who contributes to the community as a coach, coordinator and business owner, will be named the Village of Florida’s “Citizen of the Year” during an awards presentation at the Florida Family Fun Fest this coming Sunday afternoon. In announcing the selection, the Family Fun Fest Committee acknowledged Slattery’s work as a coach of Little League as well as the Seward Girls’ Varsity Softball team; he also coordinates the Mens’ Softball League. The committee also commended his support of community organizations and events, noting that he also has spearheaded several projects. The Florida Fun Fest Committee also will present two other awards: Courtney Howell, Jessica Lynn Matuszewski and the S.S. Seward Girls’ Varsity Soccer Team are co-recipients of the Youth Achievement Award. Courtney and Jessica both graduated from high school this year and will be entering college in the fall in pursuit of nursing degrees. They each received the Girl Scout’s Gold Award this year, the highest award in Girl Scouting. The soccer team won the Class C New York State Soccer Championship this past fall. James and Lillian Sturr will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. Jim was a member of the Florida Fire Department and Ambulance Corps, past director of Occupations Inc., a charter member of the Florida Lions Club and board member of the Florida Presbyterian Cemetery. Lillian was instrumental in the formation of the Florida Public Library and received the Orange County Executive’s Recognition Award for her dedicated service to the library. She also served on the Board of St. Anthony Community Hospital, and was president for several years and was a member of the Orange, Rockland and Sullivan Counties’ Heart Fund Organization. The awards will be presented at the Fun Fest on Sunday, Aug. 10, at 5:30 p.m. “All are welcome to join us in acknowledging these outstanding Florida citizens for all their immeasurable contributions to our community,” the Florida Fun Fest Committee said. The 2008 Florida Family Fun Fest schedule Opening ceremonies take place on Main Street at 1 p.m. with the flag raising with the American Legion Color Guard, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and singing of the Star Spangled Banner.
