West Point Concert band performance on March 31 to include former M-W High School and director of bands

CENTRAL VALLEY — Monroe native Michael Tiscione will perform as guest trumpet soloist with the West Point Concert Band during a free concert on Saturday, March 31, at 7:30 p.m. at Monroe-Woodbury High School.

This performance will mark the end of the West Point Band’s residency at the school, feature the Monroe-Woodbury High School band and be conducted by Dr. John Lynch, director of bands at the University of Georgia, who is also the school’s former director of bands.

Selections include Copland’s Emblems, Jess Turner’s Through the Looking Glass, and Arutunian’s Trumpet Concerto, to be performed by Tiscione.

Highlighting the performance will be the West Point Band and Monroe-Woodbury High School Band collaborating on Shostakovich’s Galop and Eric Whitacre’s Lux Aurumque. Rick Regan, the school’s director of bands, will be guest conductor on Grainger’s Molly on the Shore, Wayne Oquin’s Tower Ascending and John Mackey’s Aurora Awakes.

Tiscione is currently a member of the trumpet section of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, a position he has held since the 2002-2003 season. During the time he attended graduate school at Northwestern University, he was concurrently offered positions with the ASO and the “President’s Own” Marine Band in Washington, D.C.

In addition to his duties with the ASO, Tiscione serves as second trumpet with the Sun Valley Summer Symphony in Idaho. He has also performed with the New York Philharmonic, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the Grand Teton Summer Festival Orchestra.

As a chamber musician, he is in his third season as a member of the Atlanta Symphony Brass Quintet, performs at the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival and has also performed with the Chicago Chamber Musicians.He maintains an active teaching studio in Atlanta and is currently a faculty artist affiliate at Emory University.

Lynch is the director of bands and professor of music at the University of Georgia. He was also the music director of the Northshore Concert Band and the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony, and he is the founder of the KU/Kansas City Youth Wind Symphony and the Orange County Music Educators Wind Ensemble.

He has 10 years of public high school teaching experience in New York State as director of bands at Monroe-Woodbury High School, where he was the national recipient of the Stanbury award for outstanding teaching and conducting, and the William Revelli Award. His former students hold performing and teaching positions nationwide.
