Scholar-led book discussions at the Chester Public Library

CHESTER-This fall, the Chester Public Library offers three scholar-led book discussions of outstanding modern novels. All programs are on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. The schedule is as follows: • Oct. 5 — The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. Peggy Abt, Professor Emeritus at Orange County Community College, will lead a discussion about this international bestseller that combines a fast-paced murder mystery with fascinating and sometimes controversial historical details. • Oct. 26 — The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. Tlie scholar: Vara Neverow, Professor of English at Southern Connecticut State University, will lead a talk about this multi-faceted story of an adolescent girl searching for her mother's past in the turbulent, racially torn South in the 1960s. • Nov. 16 — The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler. Leading the discussion will be Leslie Dunn, Professor of English at Vassar College. This is a novel Jane Austen might have written had she lived in 21st century California. Paperback copies of the books are available at the library. The programs are free and open to all, but space is limited and registration is required. Call the library at 469-4252 to sign up.
