Northeast Poetry Center publishes first edition of its new literary journal

Contributors to the Wawayanda Review will read their works on Dec. 11 Warwick -The Northeast Poetry Center in Warwick announces the publication of the inaugural issue of a new literary journal, the Wawayanda Review. Featuring the work of 41 poets, the Review includes work ranging in style from formal to free and in content from sophisticated irony to direct simplicity. The volume features widely known poets such as Ed Sanders and Bob Holman and prominent local writers as well as some who have only recently been writing seriously. As the Review’s editorial statement reads: “May the rose bloom and the thistle and the orchid and the dandelion, too!” This issue was edited by poets Robert Milby and Steve Hirsch. Milby’s books include Ophelia’s Offspring and Crow Weather; Hirsch is the editor of the influential magazine Heaven Bone and author of Ramapo 500 Affirmations. Both serve on the Advisory Board of the Northeast Poetry Center. The Wawayanda Review sells for $10. The editors are currently soliciting submissions for the next issue. A reading by contributors will take place in the rear room at 7 West St., Warwick, on Saturday, Dec. 11, at 4 p.m. The front of the building houses the recently opened gallery and bookstore Utopian Directions.
