Discover, then discuss the 'Island Beneath the Sea' on May 18 at the Monroe Free Library
MONROE The Monroe Free Library will present a discussion of the 2009 novel “Island Beneath The Sea,” by Chilean-American author Isabel Allende on Wednesday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m. The discussion will be moderated by Professor Keith Walters. Copies of the book are available for loan now at the library. The book tells the story of Zarité, a nine-year-old mulatto girl who is sold as a slave in eighteenth-century Santo Domingo. The novel follows her and other characters, over the course of 40 years. The Latin American Herald Tribune calls Allende “the world’s most widely read Spanish-language author.” Walters has been teaching at Lehman College SUNY Rockland for 27 years, and has been conducting book discussions at the Monroe Library for 11 years.
