Chamber Winds presents “Classics for Winds” on May 7 Washingtonville The Hudson Valley Chamber Winds will present its second concert of the season, “Classics for Winds,” on May 7 at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Washingtonville. Juilliard Trombone Choir concert at West Point May 8 West Point The Juilliard Trombone Choir will perform a concert of modern masterpieces and transcriptions of traditional favorites for the sound of trombone ensemble in the Cadet Chapel at West Point on Sunday, May 8, at 3 p.m. Director Joseph Alessi also performs showing off his unique talents as trombonist while demonstrating the superior skills of the young Juilliard performers. Alessi is currently the principal trombone of the New York Philharmonic and performs as soloist internationally. He has made over 17 recordings to date. The Juilliard Trombone Choir will join the forces of the USMA Band Trombone Ensemble and Craig Williams, USMA organist/choirmaster, who plays the chapel pipe organ - the world’s largest pipe organ in a house of worship. Socialization program is May 13 Vails Gate A free socialization gathering for those with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia and their family caregivers will be held Friday, May 13, beginning at 2 p.m., as part of the Orange County Socialization Program at the New Harvest Christian Church on Route 94 in Vails Gate. This program provides an opportunity to socialize in a safe environment, according to officials. Pre-registration is required. Call the Alzheimer’s Association at 695-2247 for more information. Symphonic band 'Star Wars’ concert is May 14 MIDDLETOWN - The SUNY Orange Symphonic Band will conclude its 2010-11 concert series with a program of music inspired by space at 8 p.m., Saturday, May 14, at the Paramount Theater. The band’s featured offering will be an extended suite of John Williams’ music from “Star Wars.” The band will perform eight selections from all six movies in arrangements by Stephen Bulla, Jack Bullock, Donald Hunsberger and Robert W. Smith. Also on the play list will Richard Strauss’ “Also Sprach Zarathustra,” which became immortal when Stanley Kubrick used it in the opening of his ground-breaking 1968 sci-fi classic, “2001: A Space Odyssey.” Jay Bocook’s symphonic suite from “Star Trek,” utilizing themes composed by Michael Giacchino and Alexander Courage from the recent movie and the original television series, and “Mars” and “Jupiter” from Gustav Holst’s celebrated orchestral suite “The Planets.” The band, under the direction of Kevin Scott, is comprised of SUNY Orange students and members of the community.
