On Monday evenings after 6:30 p.m. or the first Tuesday of the month after 6:30 p.m. you can stop at any firehouses to see about joining the firefighting ranks.

• Today’s homes burn faster than ever. December is a leading month for home fires. Be sure to blow out lit candles and turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving home or going to bed. For more holiday safety tips visit: nfpa.org/holiday #holidaysafety. The top three days of the year for home candle fires are Christmas, New Year’s Day, and New Year’s Eve.

As you deck the halls, remember:

Check holiday lights each year for frayed wires or excessive wear.

Don’t link more than three strands of holiday lights.

Never leave a burning candle unattended. Consider using battery-operated flameless candles.

Keep your live Christmas tree away from heat sources and room exits.

Water your live Christmas tree daily to keep it from becoming dry.
