Lets celebrate this legacy

These last few days have been filled with such a depth of sadness - one we have never known - and there are just no words to express it. Our hearts simply ache.
But we are also at a loss for words to express our deepest appreciation to a community that came together to support us through our darkest days. Whether it was a newspaper left at our door, a tray of desserts sent over for my children, a special memory about Rich that was shared with us by a friend, a ride home from a sporting event, a person suddenly appearing in our yard to cut the grass or with a meal in hand, the gestures have been endless and so very meaningful.
To think back to the amazing turnout of firefighters, police officers, state troopers, coaches, teachers, school administrators, classmates along with their parents, pediatricians, friends and family – some waiting hours to pay their respects – I can only think what a gift – what a gift for our children to see this.
Not only is it a testament to who Rich was, but its a comfort to know you are all there for us. For that I am forever grateful. Its a special community and together we will start our journey of healing.
I am so very thankful to the teachers and administration from the Monroe-Woodbury School District, especially our friends at Pine Tree, the Middle School and the High School. My children found such solace amongst their classmates, their teachers, the administrators and coaches. They handled each day, each child, with such care, thoughtfulness and compassion. Thank you.
The ceremony on Saturday morning at Smith Clove by M-W Little League was a beautiful tribute to Coach Rich. Its a memory we will always cherish.
I also want to thank the M-W track and field team, Arsenal Soccer Team and Crusaders Travel Softball, the MW Girls Modified Softball team, along with the many outdoor clubs Rich participated in. Your generosity and kindness has overwhelmed me. To see so many of the boys and girls Rich has coached over the years, side by side with teams hes competed with, many showing up in uniform, I found this to be a beautiful tribute. It made us, and Im sure Rich, so very, very proud.
I would like to thank our Parish Sacred Heart for their prayers, support and a beautiful service. And to Tom Sullivan and everyone at Smith Seaman and Quackenbush for their compassion.
Thank you to the many restaurants such as Amendolas, The Captains Table, Bs Nest and Halligans, along with Dana Distributors and the American Legion Post 488 who donated food and volunteered their time to put together such a beautiful reception.
I am so grateful as I would not have been able to handle such a daunting task.
Rich clearly touched many lives in his own beautiful way. His message was simple: Be respectful on and off the field, provide a positive atmosphere for players to learn, always be supportive and encouraging, and most importantly - always do your best. Lets celebrate this legacy.
With our deepest gratitude and much love,
Dawn, Christy Ann, Tara and Patrick McCoy
