Close encounters with M-W Middle School students
Editors note: This letter was initially sent to Elsie Rodriguez, principal at the Monroe-Woodbury Middle School:
Dear Mrs. Rodriguez: We were part of the fortunate group of senior citizens who were invited to a preview of the Middle School play, Willy Wonka Junior on March 7th.
The Cub Scouts from Pack 340, Bear Den 1, provided candy to the patrons and proved themselves worthy of the Scout uniform. A big thank you goes to all the young boys who helped make the evening more pleasurable.
We enjoyed the play and felt that the young cast and crew were, indeed, talented.
The best part of the event, however, was the dinner in the cafeteria.
Yes, the food was good, but the young people were exemplary. Many of the students sat at our table and they not only offered to get us whatever food and drink we wanted, but they initiated conversations.
We found the students to be outgoing, mature, engaging, articulate and goal-oriented. We thoroughly enjoyed speaking with them and even exchanged parting hugs.
In this age of negativity, the Monroe-Woodbury students proved that there are so many positive things that can be said of todays youth.
Thank you, Monroe-Woodbury, for the invitation to the play and dinner, but mostly for the opportunity to interact with the students. We are already looking forward to next years production!
Sincerely yours, Karen and Fred Ungerer
