Eleni Carter announces her bid for re-election to BOE
I would like to take this opportunity to explain why I am seeking re-election to the Monroe-Woodbury Board of Education. Three years ago, I made a commitment to the children and taxpayers of Monroe-Woodbury to advocate for a well-rounded, quality education without the unreasonable tax burdens placed on our community in prior years. I have taken this commitment and my responsibilities as a trustee very seriously. Since then, I have chaired the Community Relations Committee for two years, focusing on improving communication with the community on issues pertaining to the school district. I am currently the chairperson of the Audit Committee, whose primary role is to assist and advise the board on issues relating to the district’s external and internal audit functions. During my tenure, the District has implemented zero-based-budgeting which has resulted in the lowest budget-to-budget increases in the history of Monroe-Woodbury, even during one of the worst economic crises facing New York State and the rest of the country. Yet, despite drastic cuts to state aid and incredible challenges facing the District, we have not lost sight of the business we are in: Educating our children. I strongly believe that the school board has an obligation to spend our tax dollars responsibly while ensuring that the caliber of our children’s education remains a top priority. After all, our children are our future. As the mother of a fourth grader, I recognize the importance of a quality education and have a vested interest in ensuring the continuation of our district’s long and proud history of excellence. My own educational and professional history is a testament to my respect for, and appreciation of, excellence in education. I am presently a doctoral candidate of organizational behavior, and I have a masters in business administration and a masters in management from Baruch College of the City University of New York. Professionally, I presently serve as a management expert and advisor to members of the senior executive teams of some of the leading U.S. organizations. Prior to that, I was a member of the adjunct faculty at the Culinary Institute of America, at the Stern School of Business at New York University and at the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College. A school district does more than educate; it produces students who are confident, secure, and committed world citizens. I believe that the current school board has taken the lead in setting the tone, the values and the priorities to develop our children for the future. I am confident that my history on the Board of Education, as well as my professional and personal commitment to education, ethics and financial responsibility, will enable me to successfully fulfill my commitment to our children and the taxpayers. I ask that you support my candidacy, as well as those of Jennifer Trumper and Wayne Chan, on May 17. Sincerely, Eleni Carter Candidate for the Monroe-Woodbury School Board
