Woodbury to unveil 9/11 memorial
HIGHLAND MILLS - As a prelude to the marking of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11, the Town of Woodbury has announced it will unveil a new memorial on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m. at the Highland Mills Firehouse. Maria Hunter, chairperson of the event and chair of the Woodbury Beautification Commission, said on Wednesday afternoon that the intent will be “to honor all who lost their lives in the entire day’s events.” Hunter said the committee has opted to not reveal the look of the monument until the actual day, but added it will be “very appropriate” given the somberness of the day. The monument will come at no cost to taxpayers, she added. It comes through funds generated through rental income though a line item allocated to the commission in the town’s budget. Currently, only the Town of Woodbury and the Village of Monroe are planning events to mark 9/11’s 10th anniversary. Village of Monroe Mayor Jim Purcell told The Photo News in an e-mail on Tuesday that the village’s plans are yet to be finalized and are being coordinated by the Rev. Alon White of Grace Episcopal Church in Monroe. Hunter said all those who wish to be present and participate are invited to attend. To learn more, call 928-6342. - Nancy Kriz
