Town hosts electronic collection day, offers lifeguard course and prepares accountability initiative Highland Mills - The following items come from the August e-newsletter sent out to Town of Woodbury residents by Town Councilman James Skoufis. Local government The Town of Woodbury has scheduled its first annual electronic collections day to be held Friday, Aug. 5, and Saturday, Aug. 6. The collection will be held at the Highway Garage (County Route 105, behind Town Hall) and is open to all businesses in and residents of the Town of Woodbury. Friday’s collection is open to businesses and will be from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Businesses must call 845-858-8809 beforehand to register and complete the required form. Saturday’s collection is open to only Woodbury residents and will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. No prior arrangements need to be made. All electronics will be collected except for “white goods” (i.e. refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, etc). The Woodbury Parks Department is again offering a life guarding course to be held at Earl Reservoir. The course will be held Aug. 15-19, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Candidates must be at least 15 years old to participate. Attendance at all classes is required for certification and the cost, which is to be paid at the time of registration, is $200. If the student works as a lifeguard for the Town of Woodbury the following season, a majority of the course fee will be reimbursed. Space is limited; call 928-9588 ext. 6 if you are interested. Councilmen Frank Palermo and James Skoufis and Clerk Desiree Potvin have been working on a bipartisan proposal that would hold the town board to a high standard of responsiveness. Under this initiative law, if a constituent ever comes before the town board and does not receive a timely and thoughtful response to his or her concern, the resident can collect a predetermined number of signatures and require the town board to discuss and act on their issue. The town board does not have to vote in the affirmative or support the issue but, at the very least, there must be a public discussion with on-the-record action taken. A public hearing will be held on the proposed law at the town board’s Thursday, Aug. 18, meeting (at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall). Per a new state law, municipalities are required to provide to the public documents that are to be discussed at upcoming board meetings.
