Highland Mills — The Woodbury Public Library’s book talk discussion group will meet Wednesday, Oct. 5, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Highland Mills branch to discuss “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett. According to writer Joshilyn Jackson: “'The Help’ is a startling, resonant portrait of the intertwined lives of women on opposite sides of the racial divide (in the rural South of the 1960’s). Stockett’s many gifts - a keen eye for character, a wicked sense of humor, the perfect timing of a natural born storyteller - shine as she evokes a time and place when black women were expected to help raise white babies, and yet could not use the same bathroom as their employers. Her characters, both white and black, are so fully fleshed they practically breathe - no stock villains or pious heroines here.” Books are available for participants to borrow at both the Highland Mills and Central Valley branches. Bring your suggestions to the October meeting on what books to discuss at future meetings on Nov. 2 and Dec. 7. Call 928-2114 or 928-6162 to sign up.
