The following excerpt is taken directly from the assessment by Stearns and Wheler, LLC., Environmental Scientists and Engineers, of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed New York City aqueduct tap in Southern Orange County by the village of Kiryas Joel: Project description The closest NYCDEP water facility to the Village (of Kiryas Joel) is the Catskill Aqueduct, where it crosses through the Towns of New Windsor and Cornwall in the Vails Gate area. To get the New York City water to the Village, they must construct facilities to convey the water from the Vails Gate area to the Village. In addition, as the water in the aqueduct is unfiltered, it must be treated before it can be provided for public uses. The Village has developed a preliminary plan for constructing and operating the facilities necessary to meet these requirements which consists of the following main components: 1. Tap of the NYCDEP's Catskill Aqueduct in the vicinity of Riley Road in the Vails Gate area of the Town of New Windsor. 2. A 2.0 mgd pumping station near the Town of New Windsor's water treatment plant on Riley Road. 3. Eighteen- to 24-inch diameter pipeline (three routes were evaluated): Chosen Route (map at right): Routes 94/27/208 (13 miles) - Riley Road (Town of New Windsor) - New York State Route 94 - Clove Road (Towns of Cornwall and Blooming Grove) - Clove Road (County Route 27) - New York State Route 208 - New York State Route 17 - Weider Boulevard (Town of Monroe) - Schunnemunk Road (Town of Monroe and Village of Kiryas Joel) - Berdichev Road (Village of Kiryas Joel) Alternative Route: Routes 32/44 (13.5 miles) - Riley Road (Town of New Windsor) - New York State Route 94 - New York State Route 32 - Ridge Road (Orange County Route 44) - Seven Springs Road (Town of Woodbury) Alternative Route: Routes 87/32/44 (12 miles) - Riley Road (Town of New Windsor) - New York State Thruway (New York State Route 87) - New York State Route 32 - Ridge Road (Orange County Route 44) - Seven Springs Road (Town of Woodbury)
