Highland Mills The following information was originally published in the electronic newsletter sent out each month by Woodbury Town Councilman James Skoufis: Government The Woodbury Town Board recently passed, by a 3-2 vote, the Initiative Law. The law gives residents the option to collect signatures and require the board to discuss and vote on an issue of concern that they feel is not being properly addressed. Councilmen Amidee Haviland, Frank Palermo and James Skoufis voting in favor of the law; Supervisor John Burke and Councilman Carlton Levine opposed it. Town Clerk Desiree Potvin helped write the law at no cost to the taxpayers. State Sen. William J. Larkin Jr. announced last month that a state fund has been set up to aid those residents affected by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee. The program is to replace “essential appliances” like refrigerators, boilers, furnaces and washing machines, and is available to New Yorkers who did not receive insurance or FEMA reimbursements for these items; all grants are on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications are available at nysappliancerebates.com or by calling 877-697-6278. The repairs to the Ridge Road and Oakland Avenue bridges are well underway and should be operable in the near future. Route 105, being a county road, is not under Woodbury’s jurisdiction but crews have been out repairing the damage there as well; the road, however, is not expected to re-open for quite some time due to the extensiveness of the destruction. A public hearing is scheduled for the Town of Woodbury Fiscal Year 2012 Budget for Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall. In the meantime, the board will be reviewing the budget line-by-line in an effort to make it as responsible as possible. The Woodbury Town Board is accepting letters from any Woodbury resident interested in volunteering to serve on the Board of Assessment Review. Letters are due to Woodbury Town Clerk Desiree Potvin by 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14. The letters can be dropped off at Town Hall, mailed to PO Box 1004, Highland Mills, faxed to 928-7380 or e-mailed to dpotvin@woodburyny.us. This year’s local elections will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 8. The polls in Woodbury will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. The contested races include: Two spots on the town board. The candidates in alphabetical order are: Tim Arone, Amidee Haviland, Carlton Levine and Lynn Prestia. Highway Superintendent. The candidates are where Pete Stabile and Rob Weyant. Calendar Saturday, Oct. 15 The Central Valley United Methodist Church is holding its annual fund raiser, a combination “Flea Market-Bake Sale-Homemade Soups” from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. The church is located near the top on Smith Clove Road in Central Valley. Sunday, Oct. 16 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer hosts its annual walk at Woodbury Common Premium Outlets, starting at 7:30 a.m.; on-site registration will be available. Saturday, Oct. 22 The Central Valley Elementary PTA hosts its first annual Outdoor Fall Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. -at the CV Elementary School across Route 32 from Woodbury Common Premium Outlets. The PTA is still accepting applications from vendors. Any business interested in participating should e-mail centralvalleypta@gmail.com. Vending costs are $50 per space for crafters, $100 per space for food, arts/crafts, and entertainment tables; Tables may be shared by two vendors splitting the cost. Sunday, Oct. 23 A local girl scout, to earn the prestigious Gold Star Award, recently renovated the Dog Park near Earl Reservoir. The re-opening ceremony to present the terrific upgrades is set for 2 p.m. The public and their canine friends are encouraged to attend. Saturday, Oct. 29 The Woodbury Parks Department hosts its annual Halloween Party at Earl Reservoir from 3:15 to 9 p.m. Activities will include pumpkin decorating, arts and crafts, a costume parade, haunted hayrides and a movie at dusk.
