The cost of going green
M-W schools undergo $12,125,000 in energy conservation measures Central Valley - The Monroe-Woodbury School District is spending $12,125,000 this summer to increase the energy efficiencies of all its buildings, including its seven schools. The work ranges from replacing old, old windows in North Main Elementary with insulated ones to installing a photovoltaic system at the high school. The work also includes asbestos removal at Central Valley and North Main elementary schools. School officials expect that the work will result in energy savings of more than $14 million over the next 18 years through one-time rebates (total of $226,182) and a combined annual energy ($601,328) and maintenance ($85,000) savings of $686,828. (A chart showing an analysis of the costs and the savings of the overall project appears on page 15.) The work is expected to be finished before school opens Sept. 2. Most buildings will have energy conservation measures such as lighting retrofit, motion sensors, vending misers, mechanical upgrades, building management system upgrades, building envelope improvements and monitor replacement and computer controllers. The following charts and graphic provide a breakdown of how and where the $12,125,000 will be spent and highlight other work at each building. School by school breakdown M-W High School In addition to the overall energy projects, the High School will see the installation of a photovoltaic system and transformers. This will save more than $38,000 annually. M-W middle school In addition to the overall energy projects, the conservation measures for the Middle School include a pool cover. School officials estimate this will save $4,866 annually. Central valley In addition to the overall energy projects, the conservation measures for Central Valley Elementary School include asbestos abatement as well as kitchen hood controller and windows and window film (annual district-wide savings estimated at $55,000). North main In addition to the overall energy projects, the conservation measures for Central Valley Elementary School include asbestos abatement as well as kitchen hood controller and windows and window film (annual district-wide savings estimated at $55,000).
