Story Time is a piece of cupcake in Monroe

MONROE-Toddlers and preschoolers were treated to an end-of-summer storytime bash at the Monroe Free Library's annual Cupcake Party. Over 50 children ages two years to five years listened to stories, sang, and ate cupcakes baked and decorated by the teen volunteers of the Summer Reading Program. Much to the delight of the little ones, a special surprise guest made an appearance: Elmo, of Sesame Street fame. "Storytime gives experience in socializing with others, as well as sparking an interest in books," said Rebecca Lynn, head of Children's Services at Monroe Free Library. Teenaged volunteers for the Summer Reading Program at Monroe Free Library helped out at storytime by reading out loud, acting as puppeteers and leading the children in song, along with Children's Assistants Charlotte Grossarth and Christina Ryan-Linder. After being dazzled by a wide array of besprinkled cupcakes, the children moved on to meet an orange ostrich puppet operated by Grossarth and the guest of honor, Elmo. As the big, fuzzy, red Muppet towered over the tots, smiles, hugs and hero worship were the order of the day. "Our summer storytimes are drop-in, with no registration necessary, to better fit in with our patrons' relaxed summer schedules," says Mrs. Lynn, "Fall storytimes require registration and fill up quickly."
