CENTRAL VALLEY — Monroe-Woodbury Athletic Director George St. Lawrence has announced that Aja Finocchiaro, a member of the high school’s Varsity Alpine Ski team coached by Erin Emmett, is the “Athlete of the Week” for the week ending Feb. 10.

In just two seasons on the high school race team, Aja, a sophomore, has led the Crusaders girls team by finishing fifth in division meets for both slalom and giant slalom events.

Her strong performance has put her in position to qualify for the state championships during the February 14th Section Championships.

This will be Aja’s second year attending the Section IX Championships, an achievement, that as a freshman, helped earn her the teams 2010-11 MVP award.

Aja began skiing at the early age of 3 and was racing by age 9, which has included racing outside the high school program in the United States Ski Association circuit. Her skills gained from her early introduction to the sport have been paying off, but it is also her confidence and verve that have pushed her into the top tier of girl racers in Section IX this season.

Aja is not only an upcoming star for the Monroe-Woodbury team but also has shown her dedication to school by being named a scholar athlete during last year’s season and has maintained an average that earned her high honor roll this year.

Aja continues to shine both on the race course and as a teammate and with two more seasons in her future, she will be a skier to watch.
