Rachel Campo is Monroe-Woodbury High School's 'Athlete of the Week'
CENTRAL VALLEY — Rachel Campo, a member of the Monroe-Woodbury Varsity Indoor Track Team coached by William Mpasiakos, has been selected as the high school's "Athlete of the Week" for the period ending Jan. 29.
Rachel, a senior, has been on the Indoor Track Team for two seasons and on the Outdoor Track Team for four years. She is the leading shot put and weight thrower on the team.
"Rachel is a thrower who brings enthusiasm and drive to her chosen sport," Athletic Director Ron Montalto said in his press release announcing the athlete's selection. "Her work ethic and strong leadership skills have been a consistent presence in the area of the throws for the past four years."
In addition to numerous successes in previous years, she has done well so far this season.
At the inaugural Freedom Games, held on Jan. 9 at a new facility called Ocean Breeze in Staten Island, Rachel placed fourth in the weight throw.
She also won the West Point Developmental meet and then placed fifth in the shot put invitational at the Archbishop Molly Stanner Games on Jan. 15 at the New York City Armory.
Rachel is helping to lead her team into their championship part on the season as the county championships approach on Jan. 29 and 30, along with the Class A Section IX Championships scheduled for Feb. 5.
"Rachel is coached in the throws by Ricky Callan, who also loves the enthusiasm Rachel brings to practice everyday," Montalto added.
