— The suspense and excitement build this week for the Primo Sports FC 15 boys soccer team as it prepares to play in the New York State Cup this Saturday.
This team of 15-year-olds has remained undefeated throughout the tournament, which began in March and will be represent the Hudson Valley. Seven are from Monroe-Woodbury, but other members come from Goshen, Liberty, Arlington, Washingtonville, Middletown and Newburgh, and also from Dutchess and Sullivan Counties. They have played New York Elite from Albany and the Westchester Flames. Other teams were from Hauppauge and Deer Park, and they will play against Smithtown at Stringham Park in Lagrange, N.Y., for the Eastern New York State Cup Championship this Saturday at 1 p.m. If they win, they will go to West Virginia for the Region 1 Championship June 29 to July 5.
“We are so extremely proud of these young men who have overcome so much to make it thus far,” said Coach Jim Lagarde. "The next couple of games will be very special for all of us. When you think of the word 'team,' this is a group that exemplifies every aspect of it on and off the field, and they deserve everything that is coming their way.”
On Sunday, the team will play Commack at Commack, N.Y., in the Semi-Finals of the New York Club Soccer League's New York Cup. If they win, they will play in the Championship of the New York Cup on June 12 at HBC Complex in Huntington, Long Island.
Lagarde said the team has been together since 2010, when the boys were 10 years old. Some members have come and gone, but at least 11 or 12 of the boys have been working together from the beginning. Since they started, he said, the team has been attracting some of the more talented and better players, and this is reflected in their record.
Primo Sports first opened in 2008 in Florida, N.Y., in the back of the Orange County Sports Club, with zero teams. It has since grown considerably. Currently, Primo is putting together club structures for 150-175 active soccer players, both boys and girls born from 2000-2010, for 12 teams. It has expanded to include an outdoor soccer complex in Pine Island, next to Scenic Farms Golf Course, and is finalizing plans for new facilities to be built on Route 94 in Chester.
