Monroe-Woodbury Girls and Boys Indoor Track teams are OCIAA champions - once again

    On Saturday, the Monroe-Woodbury Boys were crowned OCIAA Indoor Track and Field Champions, besting a field of 25 teams. The Crusaders have now won 7 of the past 10 OCIAA Boys Indoor Track and Field titles.

WEST POINT —Both the Monroe-Woodbury Girls and Boys Indoor Track teams won OCIAA championships last weekend at West Point.
The girls earned their fifth consecutive championship while the boys won for the seventh time in the last decade.
Varsity Girls Track and Field TeamThe girls competition was closely contested between Monroe-Woodbury and Cornwall with both teams holding a lead at several points.
It was not until the final events of the day - the relays - that M-W gained a final and decisive advantage by winning two races and placing second, while Cornwall got a second and two fourth-place finishes.
Key performances came from new Orange County Champions Daniella Napoli, who won the 1000m run, and freshman Alicia Johnson, who won the long jump.
There also was the second, third and fourth-place sweep in the pole vault.
Monroe-Woodbury also benefitted from a very strong freshman class with Tehya Harvey placing third in the 300m dash; Ameilia Giraud placing sixth in the 55m hurdles; and Maggie Petrich placing sixth in the 1500m race walk.
The next competition is the Section 9 meet this Saturday, Feb. 17, at West Point.
Varsity Boys Track and Field TeamThe Monroe-Woodbury Varsity Boys Track and Field Team was crowned OCIAA Indoor Track and Field Champions, besting a field of 25 teams.
The Crusaders totaled 92 points over the 16 event competition.
It was a team effort with 19 boys contributing at least one point to the team’s score. Five athletes finished second in their event while five others placed third.
Sophomore Owen Kelly was the Crusaders’ lone event champion, winning the long jump on his final attempt with a leap of 20 feet 0.5 inches.
The Crusaders have now won seven of the past ten OCIAA Boys Indoor Track and Field titles and 22 of 45 championships dating back to the inception of the meet in the 1970s.
