On a beautiful Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 15, the Crusaders traveled to Washingtonville to face the Wizards in a key OCIAA crossover match.
The Crusaders entered the game with a 11-1 record, having beaten Valley Central last Thursday 2-0. The Crusaders beat the Wizards 1-0 in a defensive battle when the two teams met earlier in the season.
After the two teams battled throughout the first half. Catrina Maches scored on a shot from outside the box to put the Wizards up 1-0 with five minutes left in the half.
In the second half the Crusaders pressed the attack with a little more pace but still the upset-minded Wizards kept the Crusaders off the board.
With under a minute left in the game, Kayla Bauer”s corner kick found Gabrielle Mpasiakos, whose header over the Wizard defense saved the day for the Crusaders and forced overtime.
Early in the first overtime period, Anna Maggi got a pass from Josephine Sorce and hammered a shot just under the cross bar to give the Crusaders a 2-1 lead.
In the second overtime period Sorce and Kaelyn Salatto worked a perfect give-and-go with Sorce finishing off the play by putting the Crusaders ahead 3-1.
Finally, the Crusaders capped off their come-from-behind victory when Salatto and Sorce worked their magic again with Sorce finishing the play, putting the Crusaders up 4-1.
The Crusaders' 4-1 overtime victory brings their record 12-1 on the season. Their next game will be Friday when they host the Tigers of Kingston.
