Monroe-Woodbury captures Section 9 cross country championships

On a beautiful fall afternoon Wednesday, Nov. 6, the Crusaders Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams traveled to Bear Mountain State Park to take part in the Section 9 Championships.

The boys' Class A race started at 10 a.m. with 75 racers representing 11 schools on the three-mile course.

The Crusaders captured the team title with a score of 48; Warwick took second with 59 points and Cornwall came in third with 86.

Behailu Bekele-Arcuri of Warwick came in first in the Boys' Class A race with a time of 15:32.1.

The top five Crusader finishers were Andrew Yi in third, Cesar Juarez in ninth, Brian Whitfield in 11th, Keith Allen in 12th and Tyler Anderson 13th.

The Crusaders' Section 9 Team Championship qualifies them for the NYSPHSAA Championship which will be held Nov. 16 in Plattsburgh.

The Girls Class A race went off at noon with 74 racers from 11 schools over the same three-mile course.

The Crusaders took the team title with a score of 48, Cornwall took second with a score 63 and Washingtonville came in third with 118.

Karrie Baloga, a ninth grader from Cornwall, won the Girls Class A race with a time of 17:03.7.

The top five Crusader finishers were Evelyn Gonzalez-Valle in second, Leah Smith in sixth, Cameryn Cain in eighth, Samantha Apostolico in 14th and Mia Sisilli in 18th.

The team's first-place finish also qualifies them for the NYSPHSAA Championship that will be held in Plattsburgh.
