MONROE — Several boys and girls from the Monroe area were named local champions of the 2012 Knights of Columbus free throw championship, earning the right to compete at the district level.

Monroe Council 2079 sponsored the local competition at Sacred Heart School gymnasium. All youngsters ages 10 to 14 were eligible to participate.

Alyssa Barone and Patrick O’Boyle captured the title as the 10-year-old champions.

Emily Smyth and Brendan Bernsley were the winners of the 11-year-old divisions.

Mary Costa and Joe Kyle came out victorious in the 12-year-old divisions.

Laura Farjardo and Evan Jansen battled it out for the 13-year-old titles.

James O’Boyle won the 14-year-old boy’s division.

Each contestant was allowed 15 free-throws. Ties were settled by successive rounds of five free throws per contestant until a winner emerged.

Each of these winners will compete in the district competition to be held on Monday, Feb. 20, at the Sacred Heart School gymnasium with an eye toward moving on to the chapter, regional and state levels.

Monroe Council 2079 sponsors this event every January.
