M-W Varsity Volleyball Team defeats Middletown in straight sets

CENTRAL VALLEY — The Monroe-Woodbury Varsity Volleyball team hosted the Middies of Middletown at home on Central Valley on Monday, Sept. 18.
The Crusaders entered the match with a 4-2 record on the year while the Middies were still looking for their first victory on the season.
In the first set, the Middies battled the Crusaders and were only down 18-17 when the Crusaders' new head coach, Candyce Allen, called a time out to refocus the team.
The Crusaders responded and went on to take the first set 25-19.
In the second set, the scrappy Middies gave the Crusaders another good effort but the Crusaders prevailed 25-18.
The Crusaders completed the sweep, winning the third set 25-17.
Outstanding performances were turned in by:
• Shannon Hiner: nine digs; two kills, ace;
• Jessica Ader: 10 kills, three digs; and
• Kathleen Riegner: 21 assists; eight digs; seven kills.
The Crusaders' victory brings their season record to 5-2.
