MRYTLE BEACH, S.C. — The Monroe-Woodbury High School Girls Varsity Cheerleading team earned third place honors at the Cheer Ltd Nationals at CANAM, held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on March 17 and 18.
The team competed in the D1 Large Varsity division, among the many divisions and teams which participated at the competition.
"Knowing they were heading South two weeks after their regular season ended, they got to work and made the changes that needed to be made in order to be competitive in this Southern competition," said Lee Friedman, a team parent. "They wound up placing third with a very close score to the second-place team. They were applauded by many fans who were not quite used to seeing the National Cheerleading Association's style of cheerleading. They were Section 9 champions and brought their true New York style and excitement to Myrtle Beach."
The first CANAM was held in Canada in 1988 and the second was held in Myrtle Beach. The original plan was to alternate between Canada and the U.S. but after the second annual "CANAM Challenge Cup" in Myrtle Beach, the choice was made to make Myrtle Beach the home to CANAM.
