YORKTOWN HEIGHTS — On Monday, the first day October, the Monroe-Woodbury Girls Varsity Soccer team traveled to Yorktown High School to take on the Huskers in a non-league game.
The Crusaders entered the game with an 8-1 record, having pulled off an impressive 3-1 come-from-behind victory over Suffern in their last game.
The first half was played in front of the Huskers net but for some reason the Crusaders seemed to be able to kick the ball everywhere, like high over the crossbar, wide to either side or off the goal posts and crossbar but not into the net.
Finally, with just seven seconds left in the half, Kaelyn Salato hit Liz Allen with a picture-perfect pass and she put it into the Huskers' net to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.
Early in the second half the Crusaders struck again when Salato took a quick pass from Hannah Kelly and drilled it past the Husker goalie to put the Crusaders up 2-0.
The Crusaders defense turned in another strong outing as they recorded their seventh shutout off the season.
The Crusaders back line of Kiley Kirkpatrick, Tehya Harvey, Nicole Conway and Jillian Fabbro played an outstanding game as they shut down the Huskers offense and only allowed the one shot on goal late in the game.
The Crusaders' 2-0 victory brings their record to 9-1 on the season as they prepare to face Middletown High School next.
