NEWBURGH — The Monroe Woodbury Varsity Hockey Booster Club has scheduled the Championship Banner Raising Ceremony and dinner for retired coach Paul Bacsardi Jr. for Saturday, Dec. 12, at the Ice Time Sports Complex in Newburgh.
The dinner and banner ceremony were cancelled twice last year due to inclement weather.
The second annual Alumni Game has been scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 2.
On Saturday evening, Dec. 12, a banner commemorating the 2007 New York State Championship team will be raised before the M-W varsity hockey game vs. Yorktown at 4:30 p.m.
Members of that team, along with their coaches, will be on hand for the banner presentation.
Admission to the game is free.
The coach who started M-W hockey
That same evening, at 6 p.m., a dinner to honor Coach Bacsardi, will be held at the Handsome Devil Restaurant, upstairs at the IceTime Sports Complex.
Bacsardi, a former high school English teacher, started the M-W Varsity Hockey Team and coached it for more than 30 years, winning the state championship in 2007.
In 2013, with an overall record of 315 wins and 190 losses, Bacsardi retired, and a year later was inducted into the New York State High School Hockey Hall of Fame.
“We’re looking forward to having that banner hanging in our home rink as a reminder to all fans and visiting teams of the accomplishments of the M-W hockey program," said Frank Alessandrino, the current varsity coach and M-W graduate. “Without Coach ‘B’, ice hockey may never have become a varsity sport at M-W, and it’s time we honor the contribution he made to the program and his tremendous success as the head coach.”
Dinner informationAll former players, families and all M-W hockey fans are invited to attend.
Tickets to the retirement dinner are $20 if purchased before Nov. 30 with any proceeds benefiting the M-W Varsity Hockey Booster Club.
